How I made the Tram and my Composite Images.

Tram

I made the tram (below) in a programme called google sketch up. I started off with a long 2D rectangle and i used the Push/Pull feature to make the rectangle a 3D cuboid. With pencil tool i drew a horizontal line across the face of the cuboid and i used the move feature to make the face side pointed, more like the front of a tram would be.

On the side of the cuboid i drew out several square holes to act as windows for the tram. I also installed a large cuboid hole on the top face of the tram to act as a windscreen. Below the windows on the side I drew a line as a design to make the tram look a bit more interesting. I also coloured the outside of the veichle a silver metal colour.

Internally i installed bucket seats all around the tram. I also gave the interior a carpet floor and tiled walls. In the drivers area i drew out 3 circles and coloured them different colours to make them look like control panel buttons.

Composite Images

To create these images i used a programme called The GIMP. I first found pictures of well known areas in Derry such as Shipquay Street and The Bogside. I then found suitable pictures of transport veichels to super impose onto the images of Derry.

In GIMP the first thing to do is to open the picture of the veichle (Tram, Gondola etc.). Then I edited the image so as none of the background would be there. I then superimposed the image of the tram onto the background of Derry, and edited it accordingly.

I have a keen interest in the Irish language and on finishing my secondary education, I would like to further my study of the language in University. Irish is an evolving subject which has recently been recognised as an Official EU Language giving it great potential. I really enjoy learning how to talk fluently in another language and reading Irish literature. I look forward to studying the older versions of the language and how the different dialects across the country have developed. I communicate well with others and I believe this is a key skill in the study of any language. It is something I wish to continue post-degree by teaching others either in a school or a less formal environment with the aim of promoting the Irish language.

My communicating skills have developed through the work experience I undertook last year in the BBC Offices in London. I am interested in media both in the Irish and English language and during my time in the studios I was taught lighting and sound techniques, how to produce television and radio programmes. I had the opportunity to met and discuss key aspects of broadcasting with those directly involved in the industry and this was of great benefit to me.

My other area of interest is in ICT. I am studying Applied ICT for A-Level and over the past two years my projects have included the application of I.C.T. to the running of a business, the use of photo editing applications to create composite images and I have used design software to create a 3D project. I have achieved a Key Skill in Information Handling. I have received a certificate in Software Engineering from the North West College.

My study of A-Level Maths

I have many responsibilities in school. I am a prefect, which involves duty twice a week supervising fellow students and representing the school on both formal and social occasions. I was an original member of the Media Club in School. I also helped implement a programme for junior students to encourage speaking Irish around school outside the classroom. Every Monday at lunchtime I meet with the students and have lunch through Irish.

Outside of School, I am very interested in sports. I am an active member of my local GAA Club, I play for the Senior and Reserve teams at Midfield and also help coach the younger teams. I organise a Summer Camp each year with the other members of the Senior team and once a week I write a summary of club events for the local paper. I also go skiing each year and have achieved a high Level 7 in the SLA Awards.

Further I enjoy listening to music and I also play myself. I play the guitar in my free time. I have travelled extensively with my family over the last few years, which has furthered my interests in languages. I have holidayed in France, Canada and Spain and love the changing cultures and traditions of each.

To conclude I have chosen my College choices based on my interest in the Irish language and the media. I visit the Gaeltacht Loch an Iuir in Donegal twice a year which gives me the chance to perfect my spoken Irish and also has convinced me in my choice of University degree.
